Pat Me On the Head...

...and call me Fido, 'cause what a good girl I am. I finally steeled the reserve to get my teeth (properly) scaled and sandblasted. But before you get the wrong idea thinking this star is a commendation to self ~ it is NOT.

Rather, it is posthumously bestowed upon the goddess of Oral hygiene, Robin, who did such a spectacular job causing me NO discomfort at my first ever braced cleaning that I would hug her had this not been our first encounter (and as strangers, no matter how intimate they may be with your mouth, tend to have requests for restraining orders against panting, pathetic patients on speed dial)!

Perhaps I should jump back for a second with the delayed preface that "I LOATHE CLEANINGS. " Kick me in the shins, please. Slam my fingers in the car door, Ya! Tie me up and throw burning coals in my lap...okay, you get the picture. But what's with the amazing capabilities of such otherwise pleasant-looking people to immediately find that last nerve and pick, pick, pick, till you want to die, die, DIE!!!! Normally I give them a heads up of the specific area that triggers the " Oh! I WILL bite you" reflex, but then they seem annoyed you spoiled their sport and zero in on it like a master marksman. (Sadomasochistic something-or-others... )

So imagine the surprise when, with great trepidation, I explained my sensitive bits and she listened. And.....(angel choirs break forth) tread gently and carefully with caution and concern. A rare gem, she is. Obviously, I had reception bold, italicize AND highlight that Robin is to perform my next cleaning - which is booked - & I can't wait.

You know when you find the right spot to scratch on your favourite pooch, the eyes role back & that ole hind leg gets thumping a furious tattoo? Ahhhhhhhhh!

  1. OMG, you always make me laugh! The way you write is amazing, maybe after all of this ortho business, you should write a book.
I'm so glad the appointment went well for you. You're so right about the cleanings. I just dread the thought of going but, I generally feel pretty good afterwards.

  2. I don't like the cleanings either. And always ask for Mary whenever I go for my cleanings. It's nice to have someone actually listen isn't it?

  3. lol Well good for you! I have yet to find one that I really like.
I always get really nervous right before as if I'm about to take a test. The test to see how well I've been taking care of the teeth. =( There's this one lady that always gives me a scolding like she's my mom or something. Freaks me out. I just want to poke her in the eye with the toothbrush that they give ya.

Here in London, I had a crazy Hygienist lady for a few months. The first time I opened my mouth she made a shocked noise, which was great to hear; that was pre braces and aparently it was a reaction to the position of my jaw, but still. I had a voodoo doll named after her.

  6. The lips.. ugh! The latex definitely makes them worse, but they still don't feel right to me. I can't ever go without vaseline on them. They definitely aren't as swollen but, they still burn and just feel sore. I'm hoping it's just the braces and after all is said and done, they will go back to normal. Whatever that is anymore.
    Thanks for asking:)
    Have a GREAT weekend!

  7. Oh Katherine, what a novel you so poetically create. You are a great writer and so humorous. I must say, I think I should get out the old dictionary before reading your post, quite prolific words you have there. Look at me, I dont even know what prolific is and if I even used it in the right text. It sounds good though. I enjoy reading your blog and as soon as I get an hour on my hands, I am going to read back, I know I missed so much. Thanks for all the great comments on my site and just for being such a great Ortho gang member. I was really good at this and lately I have slacked. Life is running me over. I think maybe I should get a blackberry so I can access the NET while sitting at the ballpark or wherever else life generally puts me. Then I can catch up with all. Hmmm...good thought. Well thanks for giving me the kick in the butt I needed to get back in the loop.
    You ROCK!

  8. Honestly, I kind of feel bad for giving you a hard time. Believe me, we LOVE hearing form you, (WARNING: this will sound a wee bit Hallmarkish)
There's only so much a person can do! We want you here because we really (REALLY) like you, but it's a bit selfish, considering you're working, kids, the MILLION other tasks & responsibilities that go with this..

This Orthognathic stuff is just one season in everybody's very full lives; it get's front and centre stage through the planning, prep, and immediate thereafter - it's a big deal!- but then......life moves on. When you go through the list of blogs, once folks are debraced or a year-max- post-op, how many people still update them? Once in a blue moon or on major milestones perhaps, but life moves on. This isn't a BAD thing.....In fact in alot of ways it's extremely reassuring that I won't be an obsessed freak forever...just a time! "You mean I'm going to feel good enough (over all) to almost forget all that I've been through? COOL!" I'd love to think I can keep it up forever, encouraging all the youngsters to come for generations hereafter....but how many before me/us have thought this too?

It's knowing some pretty special friendships are going to change....or be no more...as people reach this stage that is hard to let go of. Let's face it, we're an AWESOME village of people who understand what's going down with each other in a way that our own families/friends haven't quite been able fully grasp (which is why most of us are even here!). I think it's so cool the overlap in where everybody is at; you have the experienced 'elders' fresh out and full of first-hand knowledge able to mentor the newbies, & the 'newbies' so excited to have found support from the elders, and as the elders peter out the 'middlings' have moved up to pick up where the elders left off........... Our own "Lion King" circle of life! Might not like it sometimes, but it's my observations anyways.

So NO GUILT if you never getting around to reading the "back issues", girlfriend! (~ with the words, I don't mean to sound like a pompous ass, so hope it doesn't read that way :) )

Thrive and survive..........and whenever we do hear from you???? That's the sweet icing on the cake! *hug*

  9. I couldn't have said it better myself! The way you put things into words... incredible! I also hope I won't obsess over this forever but, I do think often about the connections I've made and how I can keep them going.
I can't even imagine going through this without the support of this group we have. It bothers me still sometimes that my family/friends aren't reading and participating in my blog.

Take care and have a great weekend!!

  10. Have you ever asked them to give you nitrous? I almost got to try it on the cleaning the day after the spacers went on, but I have lame-ass nerves and it didn't hurt enough.

For me, the worst part is the polishing. Like nails on a blackboard, that hot squishy grit scouring your teeth ... oh yuck I get the willies just thinking about it.

I am wondering how your last appt went. Did you get the new wires and bands as promised?
